Hi Dan,

Long story short, with Slicehost, you are the admin, king of your domain, etc. No direct hand-holding, although there is some indirect support.

Longer story....

I love Slicehost. For reasons not related to the quality of Slicehost, I am taking a hiatus from them for a month or two because of some other factors. But, when I go back to needing a web host, I plan to be back at Slicehost.

You have to do pretty much *everything* yourself. They give you a base Linux build, but you have to go from there. The support network is very good though. Good chat. Good forums. Good documentation. But, in the end, you are on your own. I have created a nice document that is a guide to getting a "slice" (that is what they call your build) with Wordpress up and running fairly painlessly. I made the document as I was going through the process of getting my slice setup.

I would say go ahead and give them a try. You have to put 3 months of pay upfront, but if you cancel within 30 days, the most you will lose is a month of your money (you get a refund of the other two months).

How goes the Slicehosting? They've been on my radar for a while, and I always have the nagging pull to try them out. Tempting...

Do you have to do all your own security updates and things?
