My name is Joel Marcey. I am owner of Twin Roots, a software and technical consulting, contracting and development company. You can see my resume there or here.
I currently live in California with my spouse and our two twin boys. We moved back west in December 2007 from North Carolina. My age demographic is currently 35-44, to take a page out of the Nielsen Ratings survey
In September/October 2007, I decided that I would take the leap and go into business for myself. Right now that is manifesting itself running my own company.
If I were ever to work for an employer again, I would want to assume a valuable role in a software company that has the potential to shape the technology world, while respecting the passion and creativity of its employees in the process. Positions in program/product management, technical/user experience documentation or software engineering will be considered, and welcome, in order to work at such a company. In other words, my objective would be to enjoy my job.
I specialize in Microsoft development technologies, specifically the .NET Framework, CLR (Common Language Runtime), C#, Visual Basic, Visual Studio. I also work with XML technologies and SQL Server. I have a keen and fluent understanding of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. I am also becoming very strong with Apple technologies. In fact, I have started some Objective-C and Cocoa Touch development. I also use RapidWeaver for many of my website endeavors. My primary machine is a MacBook Pro and the primary operating system I run is Mac OS X. I am strong with Office 2008. I can run Windows via VMWare Fusion. And, if all goes well, I plan to have a Mac version of my Micro-ISV product using Cocoa.
I own a MacBook Pro, 15 inch, 2.2 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 4 GB RAM. I have a 20″ Apple Cinema Display that I use in conjunction with my laptop monitor for a sort of quasi dual-screen. I currently use Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). I also own an HP dv5t, 15.4 inch, 2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 3 GB RAM and 512 MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT video card. I run Windows Vista 64-bit on this machine. I have a 20″ HP w2007 monitor that I use for a dual-monitor setup. (My spouse uses an old school Dell Inspiron 600M.
)
I like NFL Football. My favorite team is the Buffalo Bills — it has been a sad display, I know.
I like the west coast better than the east coast, and hence we are back in California. The natural beauty and landscape of Washington, Oregon and California is just awe inspiring to me. Now, I haven’t spent too much time in the heartland, so I have no opinion there.
My favorite movie is probably the Shawshank Redemption (although Dead Poet’s Society is close as well).
Here is why I named the blog “A Life of Constant Flux”.
I consider myself knowledgeable across many technologies. Some might call this a “jack of all trades”. I don’t like that terminology. I am just excited by technology in general. What this means is that while I may not be the foremost expert in one particular technology, I am advanced in many. This proves versatility, the ability to adapt, and the ability to learn quickly. In addition, I have succeeded at many job positions including software engineer, product manager, technical writer, standards representative, just to name a few. Technology at a broad level is very exciting to me, but, as shown by work experience, I also have the capability to dig deep and be successful with specific technologies as well.
I graduated from North Carolina State University in 1997 with a degree in Computer Engineering.
That’s it for now. When I think of more, I will add it.
